A status saver that shows an empty screen is the most common complaint in this kind of app. On phones with Android 11 or newer it almost always comes down to one thing: Android has not given the app access to the folder where WhatsApp keeps the statuses you view. Here is why that happens, and how to fix it in a minute.
The short answer
- Open WhatsApp and view a few statuses. Only viewed statuses are on your phone.
- Open your status saver and allow the status folder when Android asks. Tap Use this folder, then Allow — without moving to another folder first.
- If you use WhatsApp Business, allow its folder too. It is a different folder.
If the list is still empty after that, read on.
Why statuses do not show on Android 11 and newer
When you view a status, WhatsApp writes a copy of it into a hidden folder on
your phone called .Statuses. A status saver shows you what is in that
folder.
Before Android 11, any app with the storage permission could read it. Android 11 changed the rules: an app can no longer look inside another app’s folders on its own. This is called scoped storage. Old status savers that were built for the old rules simply see nothing on a new phone.
There were two ways around it. One is “all files access”, a permission that lets an app read everything on your phone. Google Play does not allow it for this kind of app — it is meant for file managers and backup tools. The other is Android’s own folder picker, where you choose one folder and allow the app to read only that. This is the method Android is designed for, and it is the one Selu uses.
The folder picker cannot open everything: Android blocks the top of your
storage, the Download folder, Android/data and Android/obb. But it can open
Android/media, which is where WhatsApp keeps statuses — so a status saver can
open the picker at exactly the right place.
Fix 1: view the statuses in WhatsApp first
A status saver does not download anything. The .Statuses folder only contains
statuses you have already opened in WhatsApp. If you have not viewed any
statuses today, the folder is empty and so is the app.
Open WhatsApp, go to Updates, watch a few statuses, then come back.
Fix 2: allow the right folder
When Android shows the folder picker, it should already be inside the status folder. The path at the top reads something like:
Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/.Statuses
Tap Use this folder, then Allow. Do not tap back or pick a different
folder — if you allow Download, DCIM or the wrong WhatsApp folder, the app
cannot see any statuses.
In Selu, if you picked the wrong one, the app tells you (“That was a different folder”) and lets you try again. You can also redo it at any time in Settings ▸ Accounts.
Fix 3: WhatsApp Business has its own folder
WhatsApp Business keeps viewed statuses in a separate place:
Android/media/com.whatsapp.w4b/WhatsApp Business/Media/.Statuses
Allowing the WhatsApp folder does not cover it. In Selu, open Settings ▸ Accounts, tap Allow next to WhatsApp Business, and confirm the folder. Then use Change account on the Statuses screen to show one account or both.
Fix 4: the permission was lost
Android forgets the folder permission when you:
- clear the app’s storage in Android Settings,
- uninstall and reinstall the app, or
- restore the app onto a new phone.
Open the app and allow the folder again. Selu shows “Access was lost. Allow it once more.” in Settings ▸ Accounts when this happens.
Fix 5: the statuses are older than a day
WhatsApp deletes the copy on your phone about a day after it writes it, and a status disappears for everyone 24 hours after it is posted. A status you viewed yesterday morning may already be gone.
If you want more time, turn on Keep statuses in Selu’s Settings. From then on, the app keeps a copy of each status you view for 1, 3 or 7 days. It cannot bring back a status that was deleted before you turned it on.
Fix 6: WhatsApp in a “dual app” or second space
Some phones let you run a second copy of WhatsApp (“Dual Messenger”, “App twin”, “Second space”). That copy lives in a separate Android user, with its own storage. No status saver can read it without rooting the phone, and Selu does not try.
On Android 10 and older
Older phones keep statuses in WhatsApp/Media/.Statuses at the top of internal
storage, and a status saver reads it with the normal storage permission. If an
app works on an old phone but not on a new one, it was built for the old rules.
